Two Decades of Firewise USA in Kansas!

The Tuttle Creek Lake community of University Park in northern Riley County is gearing up to celebrate 20 years of Firewise USA recognition next year. Nestled in one of the most picturesque areas of northeastern Kansas, University Park offers breathtaking views of canyons, woodlands, and meadows—an idyllic retreat from city life. But with that beauty comes a significant wildfire risk.

For many residents, the early 2000s served as a wake-up call when wildfires began sweeping through the surrounding landscapes. Homeowners and the local fire chief recognized that it wasn’t a matter of if a devastating wildfire would impact University Park, but when. In 2005, concerned residents, along with the Riley County Fire Department, partnered with the Kansas Forest Service to begin their Firewise USA journey—an initiative that has now stood strong for two decades.

Since earning their Firewise USA recognition in 2006, University Park has experienced multiple wildfires. While the threat remains, residents are now better equipped with tools and strategies to reduce the risk of destruction to their homes and community.

The Growing Wildfire Risk in Kansas

University Park’s story isn’t unique. Many communities across Kansas face increasing wildfire risks, especially as more residents move into rural areas. Each year, Kansas firefighters battle over 5,000 wildfires—many in the wildland-urban interface, where developed areas meet open, undeveloped land. This transition zone is where proactive measures can make the biggest difference in preventing wildfire damage.
